The Process

How CAR-T Therapy Works

Three main steps: Collect, Modify, Reinfuse

1

T-Cell Collection

T-cells are collected from the patient's blood through a process called apheresis. This is similar to donating blood and is painless. The collected T-cells are sent to the laboratory for modification.

Duration: 3-4 hours
2

Genetic Modification

In the laboratory, T-cells are genetically engineered to produce special receptors called CARs (Chimeric Antigen Receptors) that can recognize and attack cancer cells. The modified cells are then grown to create millions of CAR-T cells.

Duration: 3-6 weeks manufacturing
3

Reinfusion & Attack

The engineered CAR-T cells are infused back into the patient through an IV. These cells travel through the bloodstream, find cancer cells, multiply, and destroy them. The patient is closely monitored for side effects.

Monitoring: 2-4 weeks hospitalization

In Simple Terms

🔬 CAR-T therapy essentially "trains" your immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells. It's like giving your body's soldiers special weapons and targeting systems to fight cancer from within. This personalized approach can achieve long-lasting remissions in patients who have run out of other treatment options.

Most common side effect

What is it?

When CAR-T cells attack cancer, they release chemicals called cytokines. Too many cytokines can cause an immune response affecting the whole body. This usually occurs 1-10 days after infusion.

Symptoms:

  • High fever (most common)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue, muscle aches

Management:

UFH monitors closely and treats with medications like tocilizumab (blocks cytokines), steroids, IV fluids, and oxygen support. Most cases are mild to moderate and respond well to treatment.

Brain and nervous system effects

What is it?

Inflammation affecting the brain and nervous system. Can occur alongside CRS or separately. Usually appears 1-3 weeks after infusion but is typically reversible with treatment.

Symptoms:

  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Difficulty speaking or writing
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Drowsiness or altered consciousness
  • Seizures (rare but serious)

Management:

Close neurological monitoring, steroids, anti-seizure medications if needed. UFH has specialized ICU team experienced in managing these effects. Most patients fully recover with treatment.

Important Information

Risks & Possible Side Effects

Understanding potential complications and how they are managed

Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS)

Most Common Side Effect

What is it?

When CAR-T cells attack cancer, they release chemicals called cytokines. Too many cytokines can cause inflammation throughout the body. This usually happens 1-10 days after infusion.

Symptoms:

  • High fever (most common first sign)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Fast heart rate, difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue, muscle aches

Management:

Tocilizumab (medication that blocks cytokines), IV fluids, oxygen support, blood pressure medications. Most cases are mild to moderate and manageable. Severe cases may require ICU care.

Neurotoxicity (ICANS)

Neurological Side Effects

What is it?

Inflammation that affects the brain and nervous system. Can occur with or after CRS. Usually temporary and reversible, but requires close monitoring.

Symptoms:

  • Confusion, difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty speaking or writing
  • Tremors, balance problems
  • Seizures (rare but serious)

Management:

Steroids (dexamethasone), seizure prevention medications, close neurological monitoring. Most patients recover fully within days to weeks. Severe cases are rare.

Other Possible Side Effects

Infections

Weakened immune system makes infections more likely. Preventive antibiotics given

Low Blood Counts

Anemia, low platelets, low white cells. May need transfusions or growth factors

Nausea/Vomiting

Common but usually manageable with anti-nausea medications

Fatigue

Extreme tiredness is very common and may last weeks to months

B-cell Aplasia

Long-term loss of normal B-cells. Requires IVIG replacement therapy

Tumor Lysis

Rapid cancer breakdown can affect kidneys. Prevented with hydration and medications

You Are Not Alone

While CAR-T therapy has significant risks, UFH has extensive experience managing these side effects. Our specialized CAR-T team monitors patients 24/7, responds immediately to any complications, and has all necessary medications and ICU support readily available.

Most patients experience manageable side effects and recover well. Your safety is our highest priority throughout the entire treatment journey.

Why Choose CAR-T

Benefits of CAR-T Therapy

Revolutionary treatment offering hope when other options have failed

Targeted & Personalized

Uses your own immune cells, genetically modified specifically for your cancer. This personalized approach means the treatment is uniquely designed for you, not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Potential for Durable Remission

Unlike chemotherapy that requires repeated cycles, CAR-T is a one-time treatment. Many patients achieve complete remission lasting years. Some remain cancer-free long-term with just this single therapy.

High Response Rates

Clinical data shows 60-90% response rates in eligible patients, depending on disease type. For many patients who had no other options, CAR-T offers real hope for remission.

Living Drug

CAR-T cells are "living drugs" that multiply inside your body and continue working. They can provide ongoing surveillance, potentially preventing relapse by eliminating any remaining cancer cells.

Better Quality of Life

For patients who achieve remission, CAR-T can mean freedom from continuous chemotherapy, frequent hospital visits, and the burden of progressive disease. Many return to normal activities.

Cutting-Edge Innovation

Represents the future of cancer treatment. Continuous research is improving CAR-T safety and expanding it to more cancer types. You benefit from the latest advances in immunotherapy.
